There are many organizations that give accreditation, including the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). To find out if your online school is accredited with these organizations, simply go to their websites. By entering the name of the institution, you can immediately see whether it is legit or not.

The Carnegie Classification is another way of checking whether a school is accredited or not as recognized by the US Department of Education. Learning providers can also get a good grasp of the level of Education (Bachelor, Masteral, Associate, Doctoral) they intend to enroll in.

So even with all of these accreditations: are distance learning institutions any better than brick-and-mortar institutions? The answer can be both yes and no. As it is so easy to provide an accredited online college degree, more and more schools are offering these distance learning programs. It is a perfectly valid option, as long as the schools provides quality faculty support, curriculum, equipment, and facilities needed to conduct a distance learning institution.

Getting into Non-Accredited Institutions

Does it mean that, when you have enrolled in non-accredited online college degree programs, you are getting lower quality education? Are in an illegal or inferior program? Not necessarily. There are many understandable reasons why an institution hasn’t gotten any accreditation.

Whether you want to enroll online or want to enroll in a campus setting is entirely up to you. For example, if you would want to enroll for an online MBA, then maybe you should look for a school where it is accredited. However, if learning word processing is all you want, then you can settle for a training institute.

Whether you choose to get into an accredited online college degree or not, education is still the best way to go.
